RUGGER PUPSDetailed Coach SheetDuck Duck Goose with a Ball
Games / Reaction & ball carrying
Set up
- Children sit or kneel safely in a circle, with 2–3 circles for a full class.
- One player starts outside the circle holding a rugby ball.
- Leave a clear running lane around the outside of each circle.
How to play
- The ball carrier walks around the outside of the circle.
- They gently tap children and say “Duck… Duck… Duck…”.
- They choose someone: “GOOSE!”
- The Goose gets up and chases.
- The ball carrier runs around the circle trying to reach the empty space.
- The ball stays carried safely in two hands; swap roles and continue.
Coach cues
- “Two hands!”
- “Eyes up!”
- “Run around the outside!”
- “Find the space!”
Early Years 3–5
Walk or jog rather than full sprint; coach helps choose so everyone gets a turn.
KS1 5–7
Add ball-carry technique and a change of direction on the run.
Safety
- Run around the outside only.
- No cutting through the circle.
- Leave enough space between seated children.
