RUGGER PUPSDetailed Coach SheetJump & Land
Rugby Skills / Landing mechanics
Set up
- Reuse the scattered cones and gates from Exploring the Trail — do not rebuild the pitch.
- Nominate some gates and low markers as jump points.
- Keep clear landing space beyond every jump point.
How to play
- Children move around the area as before.
- At the selected gates they jump through or over the marker.
- Focus on the landing, not the height.
- Bend the knees on landing.
- Land balanced, then move away into space.
- Progress to carrying a ball while jumping and landing.
Coach cues
- “Soft knees.”
- “Land like a strong Pup.”
- “Stay balanced.”
- “Eyes up.”
Early Years 3–5
Small jumps only. Use imagery: “Land quietly like a Pup.”
KS1 5–7
Add a direction change on landing and carry a ball through the jump.
Safety
- Only low, safe markers.
- No jumping over children.
- Ensure every landing area is clear before the jump.
