Setup

Coaching diagram

  • Coloured gate (two cones)
  • Jump marker
  • Rugby ball
  • Movement
  • Reuse the scattered cones and gates from Exploring the Trail — do not rebuild the pitch.
  • Nominate some gates and low markers as jump points.
  • Keep clear landing space beyond every jump point.

How to play

Run the activity

  1. 1Children move around the area as before.
  2. 2At the selected gates they jump through or over the marker.
  3. 3Focus on the landing, not the height.
  4. 4Bend the knees on landing.
  5. 5Land balanced, then move away into space.
  6. 6Progress to carrying a ball while jumping and landing.

Coach language

Say it like this

  • “Soft knees.”
  • “Land like a strong Pup.”
  • “Stay balanced.”
  • “Eyes up.”

Stage

Early Years / KS1

This activity is suitable for ages 3–7. Choose a stage to see the coaching guidance for that group.

Small jumps only. Use imagery: “Land quietly like a Pup.”

Scale it

30 pups

  • Use many jump stations so there is never a queue.
  • Keep children flowing between stations rather than lining up.
  • Teacher supervises half the jump points.

Safety

Stay safe and strong

  • Only low, safe markers.
  • No jumping over children.
  • Ensure every landing area is clear before the jump.

Adapt it

Make it easier / Level it up

Make it easier: Jump over a flat line instead of a marker.

Level it up: Carry a ball, land under control, then accelerate into space.

Variations

More variations

  • Quiet landings

Score the landing on how quiet it is.

  • Land and go

    Change direction immediately after landing.
