Setup
Coaching diagram
- Attacking team
- Defending team
- Try line
- Coach / teacher (one game each)
- Create two manageable playing areas side by side.
- Coach manages the larger group and area; teacher or assistant manages the second.
- Mark a try line at each end of both pitches.
- Split into two teams per pitch — do not build rotating teams who wait.
How to play
Run the activity
- 1Players can pass in any direction — forward passes are allowed.
- 2The team moves the ball toward their try line.
- 3Defenders use a safe touch or tag.
- 4After a touch, encourage a quick pass or restart rather than stopping to explain.
- 5Score by placing the ball safely over the try line.
- 6Restart from the middle straight away and keep play flowing.
Coach language
Say it like this
- “Find space!”
- “Pass to your team!”
- “Keep moving!”
- “Score the try!”
Stage
Early Years / KS1
This activity is suitable for ages 3–7. Choose a stage to see the coaching guidance for that group.
Very few rules, a large space, and the coach actively guiding players on the pitch.
Scale it
30 pups
- Split into two games: coach runs one, teacher or assistant runs the other.
- Do not create four teams with two always waiting.
- Keep both pitches small enough that every child is near the ball.
Safety
Stay safe and strong
- Touch or tag only — no tackling.
- No diving.
- Keep the scoring areas clear of waiting children.
Adapt it
Make it easier / Level it up
Make it easier: Use extra balls, or coach-supported possession for the quieter team.
Level it up: Reduce the space slightly, or require one pass before scoring.
Variations
More variations
Pass before score
One pass required before the try counts.
Multi-ball
Two balls in play so more children are involved.
