Coaching diagram

  • Cone
  • Hidden treasure
  • Home base

  • Scatter many cones across the playing area — more cones than children.
  • Hide tags or small safe markers under selected cones before the children arrive.
  • Mark several home bases around the edge, one per Pack.

How to play

Run the activity

  1. 1Children explore the area looking for treasure.
  2. 2They lift cones safely to see underneath — cones are placed back down, never thrown.
  3. 3Children collect one item at a time.
  4. 4They carry the treasure back to their Pack's home base.
  5. 5Continue until the treasure is found, then count each base.
  6. 6Rugby progression: gently move or roll a ball to a cone before checking underneath.

Coach language

Say it like this

  • “Find the treasure!”
  • “One at a time!”
  • “Take it home!”
  • “Eyes up!”

Stage

Early Years / KS1

This activity is suitable for ages 3–7. Choose a stage to see the coaching guidance for that group.

Free exploration, lots of cones and easy treasure to find.

Scale it

30 pups

  • Use a large number of cones spread right across the area.
  • Create several home bases to reduce congestion.
  • Teacher supervises the far half of the area.

Safety

Stay safe and strong

  • Do not throw cones.
  • No hard kicking of the ball.
  • Watch for children bending down while others are running — call eyes up often.

Adapt it

Make it easier / Level it up

Make it easier: Put treasure under more of the cones.

Level it up: Carry a rugby ball while searching.

Variations

More variations

  • Pack target

Each base tries to reach a set number of treasures.

  • Ball roll
